Established as a trading center for settlers coming to the Chehalis River Valley, Elma's present town site is on land acquired and plotted by Joseph Young and James Long Waldrip. It was incorporated in 1888.
It is believed Waldrip, the first postmaster, named the town for Elma Austin, daughter of an early homesteader.
